Superintendent with Student Advisory Council

Superintendent's Student Advisory Council

The mission of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (S.S.A.C) is to provide a platform for students across HPS to work in partnership with the Superintendent and Central Office staff in collaborative, solutions-oriented problem-solving.

The SSAC serves as a voice of continuous improvement and an agent of change. Council members bring a unique and necessary perspective to district-level decision-making by providing their lived experiences as Hartford Public School students, and insights from their peers that inform policy and practice. The SSAC provides a space for students from across the District to convene and collaborate through the design and execution of projects that improve our schools or our community.

The SSAC is composed of two or more students from each school in grades 9-12 who are actively involved in their respective Student Councils. This year, the council consists of 35 students representing nine of our high schools. The council elected a Leadership Team consisting of a President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The President and Vice President will serve as student representatives at the Board of Education regular meetings, with the Secretary and Treasurer serving as alternates.

My name is Khiara Hill and I am a junior from Classical Magnet School. Other activities that I participate in include volleyball— both for my school and on a club team— and ballet. Aside from that, I also invest a lot of my personal time in writing what I hope will become my first published novel. I was interested in SSAC because it was the perfect opportunity to not only grow both as a leader and as a team player, but also to make a difference in the community that’s structured the person I am today. After high school, I’m hoping to go to a college for a degree in Creative Writing or English, and to continue publishing books as an author.
