Mission & Vision

We are a social justice-themed middle school located in the heart of Hartford’s Blue Hills neighborhood. At Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School, we believe in diverse perspectives, human rights and social concerns, stimulating curiosity, equitable and nondiscriminatory practice, productive educational practices, and student VOICE. We celebrate the diversity of our students and families and foster the belief that all stakeholders can learn from each other.

We are a learner-centered restorative school built on a commitment to high expectations, positive relationships, and collaboration for ALL students and adults.

  • Foster a nurturing environment founded on positive relationships, high self-esteem, and authentic learning experiences.

  • Use restorative approaches to repair harm and resolve conflict, establishing a safe and welcoming school community.

  • Build instructional capacity through a culture of collaboration where teachers learn and grow from each other.

  • Establish engaging, sustainable partnerships with family and community members.

At Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School, the student “DREAM” is... to excel in all that they do, be respectful of self and others, be empowered leaders, be active citizens in their school and community, and be motivated scholars.

At Dr. Martin Luther King Social Justice Middle School, we celebrate students' diverse backgrounds and languages.  Approximately, 25% of our school population are multilingual learners- students whose primary or home language is other than English. Our multilingual learners have an opportunity to advance their English language proficiency skills while studying academic courses in Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics. We look forward to working with students and their families to help students achieve their goals.

Tips for learning at home:

  • Speak and read to your student in your native language.  One language helps develop the other.

  • Learn English together through music or videos. Singing and viewing makes learning easier.

  • Visit the library to borrow books for free. Many libraries have fun, free programs to help your student become involved in the community.
