Husky Sport
Husky Sport is a community-campus partnership that utilizes the power of sport to connect and empower partners from the city of Hartford and University of Connecticut. Since 2003, Husky Sport has collaborated to identify needs, implement programming, assess progress, and build lasting relationships through intentional programs facilitated in school, after-school, on weekends, and as part of academic coursework.
Husky Sport has worked collaboratively, since 2015 with Wish School administrators, teachers, community partners and committees to engage the Wish School Community with a focus on building a positive climate and school culture of health and wellness. Husky Sport runs three school time programs and partners in one after school program that engages all Wish students in grades Pre-K-5 and their families in physical activity, nutrition education, academic enrichment and life skills. Additionally, we have aligned with Wish School to support Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) efforts by teaching and modeling Wish School Core Values - Practice Kindness - Always be Respectful - Work Hard - Stay Safe in all of our school time initiatives. We support Wish School in all school time and after school events by helping to plan, facilitate and deliver activities.
In Husky Sport, we lead with relationships; through all of our engagement efforts we strive to build and maintain lasting and reciprocal relationships. It is important to note that Husky Sport’s work is lead by UConn Faculty & Staff and largely facilitated by students, mainly at the Master’s but also at the undergraduate level who study Sport Management, Public Health, Education, Social Work and a variety of other areas of study.
