<NEW> ‘Read to a Child’ Expands in Hartford Public Schools
I’m excited to announce that the ‘Read to a Child’ program has expanded to Annie Fisher STEM Magnet School. Read to a Child is a literacy mentoring program that pairs committed adults with students for weekly 30-minute read aloud sessions. The literacy component fosters a love for reading and learning, and the mentorship with a trusted adult helps students develop their self-confidence and social-emotional well-being.
Reading is one of my favorite activities, so I was grateful to join the Read to a Child kickoff event at Annie Fisher STEM this week. I had so much fun reading You Read to Me, I’ll Read to You with the first and second graders! Annie Fisher STEM is now the fifth HPS school taking part in the Read to a Child program joining Betances Early Learning Lab, MD Fox Elementary, S.A.N.D., and Parkville Community School.
<NEW> Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
I am so proud of our schools for embracing the beauty and excitement of Hispanic Heritage Month. Breakthrough Magnet School South celebrated with a special school-wide performance by Bomba de Aquí, a dance and music company that specializes in Afro-Puerto Rican traditions. The performers shared their cultures with the students through drumming, dancing, and singing.
I also want to give a special shoutout to Mikaella Griguelo Santiago, a student at Wish Museum School, who shared my story in a video message to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month! She talked about how I moved to Hartford from Puerto Rico and how I became Superintendent. I was so humbled and honored by the video, so I made a visit to Wish to meet Mikaella and thank her in person! I loved hearing about her own experiences and her plans for the future. <NUEVO> ‘Read to a Child’ se amplía en las Escuelas Públicas de Hartford
Me complace anunciar que el programa ‘Read to a Child’ se ha extendido a la escuela Annie Fisher STEM Magnet. Read to a Child es un programa de tutoría en alfabetización que une a adultos comprometidos con estudiantes en sesiones semanales de 30 minutos de lectura en voz alta. El componente de alfabetización fomenta el amor por la lectura y el aprendizaje, y la tutoría con un adulto de confianza ayuda a los estudiantes a desarrollar la confianza en sí mismos y su bienestar socioemocional.
La lectura es una de mis actividades favoritas, así que me sentí muy agradecida de participar en el acto inaugural de Read to a Child en Annie Fisher STEM esta semana. Me divertí mucho leyendo You Read to Me, I’ll Read to You con los estudiantes de primer y segundo grado. Annie Fisher STEM es ahora la quinta escuela de las HPS que participa en el programa Read to a Child, uniéndose a Betances Early Learning Lab, MD Fox Elementary, S.A.N.D. y Parkville Community School.
<NUEVO> Celebración del Mes de la Herencia Hispana
Estoy muy orgullosa de nuestras escuelas por abrazar la belleza y el entusiasmo del Mes de la Herencia Hispana. Breakthrough Magnet School South celebró con una actuación especial en toda la escuela de Bomba de Aquí, una compañía de danza y música que se especializa en las tradiciones afro-puertorriqueñas. Los artistas compartieron sus culturas con los estudiantes tocando tambores, bailando y cantando.
También quiero agradecer especialmente a Mikaella Griguelo Santiago, estudiante de Wish Museum School, que compartió mi historia en un mensaje en video para celebrar el Mes de la Herencia Hispana. Habló de cómo vine a Hartford desde Puerto Rico y de cómo me convertí en Superintendenta. Me sentí muy honrada por el video, así que visité Wish para conocer a Mikaella y darle las gracias en persona. Me encantó escuchar sus propias experiencias y sus planes para el futuro. Invito a todos a visitar la página de Wish Museum en Youtube y las redes sociales para ver más videos del Mes de la Herencia Hispana.
