<NEW> Closing Out the Year with Strong Attendance
There are just two weeks left of school in 2023, and it’s important that we make every day count! I know you’re excited for winter break, spending time with your friends and family, and maybe even taking a trip, but I encourage you to also make attendance a priority. Your grades and learning can suffer with each missed day. As a reminder, our schools will be offering exciting incentives and events as part of our Hartford Attendance & Academic Soccer Cup, in which schools earn goals by completing attendance challenges. As of last week, Renzulli had the lead with 39 goals, closely followed by Kennelly with 38. Congratulations, and keep up the great work!
I also want to shout-out the staff and students at McDonough for implementing a walking school bus to increase attendance. The school arranged for students who live close to each other to walk to and from school in groups or pairs. McDonough’s ‘Internal Twilight Team,’ which includes the Family and Community Support Service Provider and Student Engagement Specialist, meet up with them along the way, organizing stops at local businesses for snacks. Walking in groups and pairs improves safety and makes getting to school a lot more fun! Thank you to the McDonough team for this effective initiative!
<NEW> Superintendent Student Advisory Council
I’m excited to announce that the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council is back for the 2023-2024 school year, and I am so eager to see what they accomplish together. The Council, which is made up of 21 high schoolers, gathered on November 29 with District Leaders and the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education to prepare for their year of service as student representatives. This month, students will self-nominate and elect two members of the Council to act as their Board of Education representatives for the year. Each month, these representatives will meet with Board members to share topics and issues that are most pressing to their peers. You can meet our newly elected representatives at the December 19th Board of Education regular meeting at Weaver High School at 5:30 pm or tune in virtually.
<NEW> Happy Hanukkah and Winter Wishes!
I’d like to extend warm wishes for a bright and meaningful Hanukkah to everyone in our HPS community who celebrate. Over the next few weeks, there will be many opportunities for cheer and celebrations, and I hope you have an opportunity to gather with your loved ones to enjoy all the winter season has to offer.
<REMINDER> The 2024-2025 School Selection Process is Underway
Now is the time to start thinking about which school is the best fit for you! The school selection process is now underway, with the opening of the Regional School Choice Lottery. You can find out more information about the process, select a school, and apply by clicking here. I also invite you to visit the Regional School Choice Office Fair tomorrow, December 9 from 10 am to 1 pm at the Academy of Aerospace and Engineering. Our schools will be there to show you what they have to offer! If you’d like to see a school for yourself, attend an open house or schedule a visit!

<NUEVO> Cierre de año con una sólida asistencia
¡Solo quedan dos semanas de clases en 2023 y es importante que hagamos que cada día cuente! Sé que están entusiasmados con las vacaciones de invierno, de pasar tiempo con los amigos y la familia, e incluso quizás de viajar, pero los animo también a hacer de la asistencia una prioridad. Sus calificaciones y aprendizaje pueden resentirse con cada día perdido. Les recuerdo que nuestras escuelas estarán ofreciendo emocionantes incentivos y eventos como parte de nuestra Copa de Asistencia y Fútbol Académico de Hartford, en la que las escuelas ganan goles completando desafíos de asistencia. <NUEVO> Consejo Asesor Estudiantil del Superintendente
Me complace anunciar que el Consejo Asesor Estudiantil del Superintendente está de regreso para el año escolar 2023-2024, y estoy ansioso por ver lo que logran juntos. El Consejo, que está constituido por un máximo de 21 integrantes de la escuela secundaria, se reunió el 29 de noviembre con los líderes del Distrito y la Asociación de Juntas de Educación de Connecticut para preparar su año de servicio como representantes estudiantiles. Este mes, los estudiantes se autonominarán y elegirán a dos miembros del Consejo para que actúen como sus representantes en el Consejo de Educación durante el año. Estos representantes se reunirán, todos los meses, con los miembros de la Junta para compartir los temas y asuntos que más preocupan a sus compañeros.
