<NEW> HPS Literacy Team Presents at Family Learning Session
Our HPS Literacy Team met with families this week for the second of three Literacy Learning Sessions in partnership with Hartford Parent University, Education Reform Now Connecticut, the Hill for Literacy, and Right to Read CT. Our team discussed how they have shifted strategies for teaching the youngest learners how to read, ensuring that all lessons are aligned to the Science of Reading using proven methods for instruction. They also demonstrated the tools they use in the classroom to teach students phonics, vocabulary, and more. Thank you to all of the families who came out to learn about literacy! We are so grateful for your partnership and commitment to our students. If you are unable to join, there will be one more session in this literacy series! March is Board of Education Appreciation Month, and I’d like to take a moment to recognize the incredible dedication and commitment of our Board members. They act in service of the over 3,400 staff members and 16,500 students in Hartford Public Schools, serving as ambassadors for their communities and advocates for all Hartford residents. This year has been especially difficult for the Board as they grapple with significant financial challenges throughout our schools and Central Office, and I want to commend them for the countless hours they’ve spent ensuring that our District continues to thrive. I am always grateful for their collaboration, continued support, and their belief in Hartford Public Schools.
<NEW> Celebrating Dance and Theater
I’d like to give a shoutout to the students all over the district who participate in the performing arts and the staff who help our students live out their passions. The Arts are a priority of Hartford Public Schools and the talents of our student performers are inspiring!
This week, students from schools across the district participated in the second annual Dance and Theater Festival, in collaboration with Hartford Performs. They engaged in workshops and performed in front of their peers. Check out some of the photos below!
Last week, I had the privilege of seeing Classical Magnet School’s inspiring performance of one of my favorite plays, ‘In the Heights.’ The students and staff did an amazing job, and I was moved by the messages of community, belonging and the pursuit of dreams.
I’d also like to take this opportunity to recognize Kinsella Magnet School of Performing Arts, whose production of SWAGGER was named the outstanding performance at the CT Drama Association one-act festival! Congratulations to all of the performers and their teachers!
<REMINDER> Learn More About the 2024-2025 Budget
If you are interested in learning more about the HPS budget for the 2024-2025 school year, we invite you to tune in to our next Board of Education workshop on Wednesday, March 27 at 5:30 pm. You can watch live on BoardDocs here. We also invite you to share your voice with our Board of Education at a public forum on April 2. This will take place at Weaver High School at 5:30 pm. You can sign up to speak at Weaver High School before the event. The Board of Education will vote on the final budget at their regular meeting on April 16.

<NUEVO> El equipo de lectoescritura de las HPS asiste a una sesión de aprendizaje familiar
Nuestro equipo de lectoescritura de las HPS se reunió con las familias esta semana para la segunda de tres sesiones de aprendizaje de lectoescritura en colaboración con la Universidad para Padres de Hartford (Hartford Parent University), Education Reform Now Connecticut, Hill for Literacy y El derecho a leer de CT (Right to Read CT). Los miembros de nuestro equipo analizaron la manera en que modificaron las estrategias para enseñarles a leer a los estudiantes más jóvenes, asegurándose de que todas las lecciones estén en línea con la ciencia de la lectura y usando métodos probados de enseñanza. Marzo es el Mes del Reconocimiento a la Junta de Educación, y deseo tomarme un momento para reconocer la dedicación y el compromiso increíbles de los miembros de nuestra Junta. Ellos actúan al servicio de más de 3,400 miembros del personal y 16,500 estudiantes de las Escuelas Públicas de Hartford, y se desempeñan como embajadores de sus comunidades y defensores de todos los residentes de Hartford. Este ha sido un año especialmente difícil para la Junta, ya que le toca lidiar con desafíos económicos importantes en todas nuestras escuelas y la Oficina Central, y quiero elogiar a sus miembros por las innumerables horas que dedicaron para garantizar que nuestro distrito siga prosperando. Me gustaría felicitar a los estudiantes de todo el distrito que participaron en las artes escénicas y al personal que los ayuda a hacer realidad sus pasiones. ¡Las artes son una prioridad de las Escuelas Públicas de Hartford, y los talentos de nuestros estudiantes artistas son una inspiración!
Esta semana, los alumnos de las escuelas de todo el distrito participaron en el segundo Festival Anual de Danza y Teatro en colaboración con Hartford Performs. Participaron en talleres y actuaron frente a sus pares. ¡Mire algunas de las fotografías abajo!
También quiero aprovechar esta oportunidad para reconocer a la Escuela Técnica/Artística Kinsella de Artes Escénicas: la producción que hicieron de SWAGGER fue elegida como la presentación excepcional en el festival de obras de un acto de la Asociación de Drama de CT. ¡Felicitaciones a todos los artistas y a sus maestros!

La Junta de Educación votará el presupuesto final en su reunión ordinaria el 16 de abril.
