On Friday, May 31, 2024, Hartford Public High School (HPHS) had the honor of welcoming Melody Gonzales, Executive Director of the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunities for Hispanics. This visit stemmed from Ms. Gonzales' attendance at the Latina Symposium the previous day, which sparked her interest in visiting a school in Hartford known for its culturally rich and diverse Latino student population.

During her time at HPHS, Ms. Gonzales visited classrooms, met with dedicated staff members, and participated in a dynamic student panel. Ms. Gonzales heard firsthand from students about their experiences and aspirations, and she will share insights about her vital work at the White House.

HPSThe White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics is a multi-agency working group within the Department of Education charged with strengthening the nation's capacity to provide high-quality education while increasing opportunities for Hispanic American participation in federal education programs. Under Ms. Gonzales's leadership, the Initiative works to advance cradle-to-career education, equity, and economic policy goals in partnership with the White House, federal agencies, and external stakeholders. The Initiative also leads a 21-member commission, runs a federal interagency work group focused on advancing equity and access to federal resources for the Latino community, and spearheads both in-person and virtual public engagement efforts.

Accompanied by Superintendent Dr. Leslie Torres Rodriguez, Daisy Torres-Hill, HPS Acting Assistant Superintendent of Professional Learning & Multilingual Learners, and school leaders, Ms. Gonzales had the opportunity to speak with a group of about 25 Latino/Hispanic students, including Multilingual Learners (MLs) and students from various grade levels. These students shared their dreams and plans for the future, ranging from college aspirations to ambitions of starting small businesses. This interaction provided Ms. Gonzales with a deeper understanding of the hopes and challenges faced by students.

HPSDuring her visit, Ms. Gonzales also met with two dedicated educators: Cristian Rosario, a TESOL teacher, and David Ben Schwantes, a Bilingual Resource teacher. Their discussions underscored the important role of educators in supporting the academic and personal growth of Latino students.

One of the key outcomes of this visit is heightened awareness of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics and the resources it offers. Ms. Gonzales emphasized how these federal resources can support the educational and professional ambitions of our Latino students and families. This awareness is crucial for empowering our students to take advantage of the opportunities available to them.
