Flag Football is a no-contact sport which replaces the 'tackles' of traditional football with removal of one of three fabric 'flags' attached to the ball-carrier’s waist - one on each side and another at the back. Hartford Public Schools Athletics launched Flag Football for our middle schools last year. Now in its second year during the 2023-2024 school year for middle schools, HPS launched Girls Flag Football at the high school level, and it has been exciting and truly successful at both the high school and middle school levels.
On Monday, June 3, 2024, the Middle School Championship game took place at the Weaver High pitch as Hartford Magnet Trinity College Academy (HMTCA) and Sport and Medical Sciences Academy (SMSA) co-ed teams took the the field for a heated game. With temperatures topping 87 degrees in the sun, both teams nevertheless played with heart and left everything on the field!
SMSA came out on top, winning the Middle School Flag Football Championship guided by coach Phil Buccheri and SMSA student coach, Zahkeer Kerr, Class MM All-State Football '24. Pictured in the team photo above, Mr. Kerr will be matriculating to Franklin Pierce next year and will be playing football!
Coaches let all the players know that when they're in high school, they'll be playing together on the same team!
In victory, SMSA hoists the trophy
Only girls high school flag football took place this spring. The Capital Prep/Hartford High co-op defeated the SMSA/HMTCA co-op for the Division B 2024 championship in Windsor at the CT Flag event on May 13.

Congratulations to all our Flag Football teams, players, coaches and families!
