HAPLA Fellows

Hartford Public Schools proudly launched the 2024-25 Hartford Assistant Principal Leadership Academy, a dynamic new program designed to empower the next generation of school leaders. The kickoff event, held on August 22, marked the beginning of a transformative journey for participants, known as fellows, who are dedicated to enhancing their leadership skills and making a lasting impact in their schools and communities.

During the kickoff, fellows met their mentors, received an introduction to the basic components and overview of the program, and participated in a “Re-member” protocol. This reflective activity led to the creation of a living timeline of the district’s and educational field's recent history, setting the stage for a deep understanding of the context in which they will lead.

The second session, held on August 23, focused on knowing the community—the city of Hartford and its neighborhoods. Fellows engaged with Zaretta Hammond’s Culture Tree framework and then took a bus tour of Hartford, stopping at various points of interest and meeting with a variety of stakeholders. This immersive experience allowed participants to connect with the city they serve, gaining insights that will inform their leadership practices.

The 12 HAPLA fellows will be participating in Professional Learning throughout this school year. The Professional Learning opportunities include ten learning sessions, on-going capstone project work, mentoring, and coaching. The Hartford Assistant Principal Leadership Academy is committed to developing strong, innovative leaders who will contribute to the success of Hartford’s schools and students.
