Here are some exciting athletic updates at SMSA.
Middle School
Baseball - A couple of our SMSA students, along with students from Burr and B-Stem engaged in several baseball skills clinics this spring. One of our SMSA alumni, Aiden McCarthy, took the lead on working with these boys. We hope to continue to build this program in the future.
Outdoor Track - Our middle school track students participated in 4 meets at Weaver High School this year, culminating in yesterday's middle school championship meet. Avianna Smith finished 1st in the 100m and 200m races. She also qualified to compete at the Connecticut Middle School State Championship meet last weekend, placing 14th of 84 middle school qualifiers in the 100m and 25th of 106 qualifiers in the 200m.
Flag Football - Supported by Zahkeer Kerr, as part of his capstone project, our middle school flag football team begins their playoff run today after finishing the regular season with a 7-1 record and securing the 2nd seed in the playoff bracket. The flag football playoffs run today, and tomorrow, and a championship game Monday.
High School
Golf - Our golfers completed another successful season in a co-op with HMTCA. First-year player, Ernes Cikaric made huge improvements throughout the season, making enough progress to participate in a couple matches in the later parts of the season.
Esports - In our inaugural season offering esports, our students had a great experience between the fall and spring sessions. Many of our students had never played competitively but found themselves ranked for both their Smash Bros and Overwatch teams. The Overwatch team qualified for the state tournament this year and looks forward to seeing continued improvements in the years to come.
Girls Flag Football - In another first for SMSA, our girls participated in the CT Flag Football League. Collaborating with students from HMTCA, they ended as runners-up in the B division of the CT Flag Jamboree earlier in May, competing against schools from across the area and had a great time learning the game and competing numerous times against other teams from across the city.
Boys Volleyball - Our volleyball co-op (with Bulkeley) finished another successful season, qualifying for the CVL conference and state tournaments. Ermin Alic and Ryan Rivera (Bulkeley) were voted all-conference for their impressive performance throughout the season.
Outdoor Track - Our track students worked hard all season, competing in dual and tri meets throughout the regular season to have several athletes qualify for the NCCC conference tournament and one athlete, Jaki Jackson, qualify and compete at the Class S Championship meet in New Britain.
Baseball - In the first year of our co-op with HMTCA, our baseball program qualified for the CRAL post-season tournament and the Class M state tournament. After wrapping their regular season, which included games at Dunkin Park and at Doubleday Field (Cooperstown), the boys beat University/Classical to win the CRAL tournament. Three players earned all-conference selection, Yadiel Alvarado (HMTCA), Julian Santiago (HTMCA), and Bryson Graves (SMSA).
